Spandaukop is located right next to the Valley of Desolation and guards over the town of Graaff-Reinet from the south. It is said that the mountain was named in 1801 by a retired Prussian (German) soldier by the name of Werner, after the Spandau Citadel near Berlin, Germany. This was because the mountain appeared to stand guard over the town.
